The Heavy Equipment Operator, under the supervision of the Project Foreman, Superintendent, or Civil Director, will drive or control construction equipment, including tractors, bulldozers, backhoes, or excavators, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavations. You will operate equipment to assist in the construction of structures.

Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt, Technical/Administrative
Reports To:
Civil Operations Director
- Install water, sanitary sewer, and storm drain piping and related structures according to project specifications.
- Operate heavy equipment such as trenchers, backhoes, loaders, and other machinery to excavate, move materials, and set pipe.
- Prepare and maintain construction sites, including excavation trenches, by cleaning, back filling, and compacting soil to required standards.
- Conduct daily inspections of the work area to identify potential hazards and maintain compliance with all safety protocols, including proper use of PPE.
- Locate and verify existing underground utilities prior to excavation to prevent damage and ensure safe operations.
- Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and cleaning of equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Read and interpret blueprints, project plans, and drawings to accurately guide installation and construction activities.
- Document daily job details, including work performed, materials used, and site conditions.
- Collaborate effectively with crew members, supervisors, and representatives from utility companies or other contractors.
- Maintain and secure all tools, materials, and equipment to ensure proper use and accountability.
- Perform any other general duties as directed

- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Proficient at digging footings to required grades
- Capable of programming GPS installed devices
- Experience fine grading with various types of equipment
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Ability to accurately interpret plans
- Completion of an OSHA 10-hour construction course required; OSHA 30-hour course preferred
- Capable of working with minimal oversight by willing to follow directions closely
- Ability to work in extreme weather fluctuations
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must have a great work ethic
- Must be able to accurately read gauges, dials, and other indicators, and adjust them as necessary
- Must be reliable and have a flexible work schedule
Normal on-site construction field work. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibrations. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving and mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
TypicalPhysical Needs
Requires using hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stand, talk and hear. Occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste and smell. Must be able to frequently lift 30 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
