Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker – JC‑510513 – Permanent Intermittent (up to 1,500 hours). Salary: $4,102.00 – $4,865.00 per month.

Job Description & DutiesWorking under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates light vehicles and equipment requiring a Class C driver’s license and works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to highway maintenance work. Responsibilities include snow removal during winter months, working in extreme conditions (heat up to 120 °F, cold to –15 °F), responding to emergency call‑outs, and being available for overtime, night shift, temporary and intermittent varied work shifts.
The incumbent will be on the 9/80 work schedule, subject to change at the discretion of District Management or Supervisor.
Personal safety requirements include:
- Work boots in good condition.
- Long or short sleeve shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest over non‑safety shirts or coats.
- Long pants (no shorts or cutoffs).
- Provided safety gear (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, face shields, gloves, respirator, chaps, or other equipment) as required.
- Valid California Class C driver’s license.
- Drug screening passed prior to hiring.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, equipment and tools used in highway maintenance and construction; familiarity with the California Vehicle Code related to motor vehicle loading and operation; and knowledge of regulations pertaining to highway maintenance practices.
- Eligibility on the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker exam; for non‑eligible applicants, current eligibility on the state examination list is required.
- Required education documentation (unofficial or official transcripts, degrees, or U.S. equivalency reports for foreign credentials).
