THE VACANCY

This recruitment is Open, meaning all are welcome to apply.

There are currently several openings for a regular bus driver. These positions work a minimum of 25 hours per week, on a split shift, Monday‑Friday, 10 months per year.

This recruitment will also be used to fill substitute assignments (temporary/as‑needed basis).

NOTE: If you are a current Substitute and wish to be placed on the eligibility list for a permanent position, you will need to submit your application and participate in the examination process.

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, operate and maintain school buses to transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned location using a designated route; perform regular safety inspections; prepare a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above. Six (6) months of experience as a school bus driver is preferred.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid Class A or B California Motor Vehicle Operator's License with passenger transportation endorsement, "S", and air brake endorsement
  • Must have a current DMV printout to be submitted with the job application must be less than 30 days old
  • California Special Driver Certificate valid for school buses
  • Current California Highway Patrol approved First Aid Certificate (if required on Special Driver Certificate)
  • Current Valid DL‑51 Medical Card
  • Must be able to be insured and continue to be insurable by the District's liability insurance carrier.
THE EXAMINATION
  • Supplemental Questions and Licenses/Endorsements:
    Qualifying
  • Written Examination: 50%
  • Performance Examination: 50%

An eligibility list will be established for successful candidates which will be used to fill open positions during the life of the list. This list will also be used to fill substitute assignments.

The written and performance examinations will be held throughout the recruitment. You will be contacted via email, as indicated on your application, regarding your ability to participate in the examination phase of this recruitment.

REPRESENTATIVE

DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Drive a school bus along a designated route; pick up and discharge students in accordance with time schedules; stop traffic and escort students across streets as necessary.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices; assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.
  • Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus and while waiting at bus stops in accordance with District policies related to disciplining students; prepare related reports as necessary.
  • Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses, inspecting the interior, exterior and engine of the vehicles; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required; prepare and maintain related records.
