Extra help positions are hourly employees that may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Benefits are not included.

About the DepartmentThe Public Works Department is responsible for construction and maintenance of County facilities (buildings, roads, bridges, and airports) and for managing permanent road divisions to provide maintenance of private roads. The department oversees survey mapping, land development reviews, solid waste management, the County water agency, and multiple service areas (water, sewer, road, lighting, and flood maintenance). It also administers Flood Plain Administration.
The Roads Division maintains about 1,200 miles of County roadways and related structures. The division’s budget is funded from federal and state sources.
The PositionUnder supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled, unskilled, and manual tasks in maintenance of County roads, traffic control signs and pavement markings, tree trimming, and related areas; operates trucks and other maintenance equipment; and performs related work as required.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience in road construction work (e.g., patching pavement, repairing guard rails, highway markers and fences). A working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions, including traffic control, is essential. A flagging certification is highly desired. Must be competent in operating heavy machinery and equipment, including trucks, snowplows, and road maintenance vehicles.
This position will mainly involve driving duties and requires possession of a Class A or B commercial license at the time of hire.
This is an entry level class for the Road Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents perform semi-skilled/unskilled maintenance tasks and operate smaller and simpler trucks and snow removal equipment. Duties may include, but are not limited to: clearing brush, maintaining drainage, resurfacing and patching roads, loading materials, and operating and maintaining equipment. May act as a flag person; may operate heavier equipment on temporary/relief assignments for training.

One (1) year of work experience preferably involving construction work and/or operation of trucks and equipment common to the construction and maintenance field.
Possession of a valid Class A California driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.
