St. James Parish Government is hiring for Equipment Operator I in the Road, Bridge & Drainage Division under the Operations Department.
JOB FUNCTIONDrives or operates gasoline or diesel-powered light equipment such as trucks, tractors, side‑arm/boom mower tractors, bush‑hogs, or other equipment to maintain parish property, servitude, roads and rights‑of‑way, and to repair roads and other facilities. This position is classified as essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters, and it is a non‑exempt, forty‑hour per week, safety‑sensitive role subject to random drug testing as per the St. James
Parish Government Employee Handbook. Individuals in this class can complete the majority of their projects/assignments with a minimum amount of supervision.
- Performs routine inspection and maintenance of equipment, such as checking fuel, oil, and other lubricant levels and sharpening blades; observes indicators to check for proper function of machinery and stops operation when indicated; reports mechanical problems for repair.
- Maintains logs for mileage, fuel consumption, and materials transported in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Performs a variety of manual tasks, including but not limited to: loading, unloading a truck by hand or mechanical loader; securing cargo for transit; removing trees, roots, stumps; cutting grass, weeds, and brush using hand tools and small equipment; patching/repairing asphalt, concrete, and gravel roads.
- Drives or operates small dump trucks, motor patrol, tractors, side‑arm/boom mowers, bush‑hogs, or related grass‑cutting equipment to maintain parish property, servitude and rights‑of‑way.
- Maintains equipment by washing and cleaning.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEHigh School diploma or general education diploma (GED) and 1 year experience and/or training.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measurement using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to define common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSMust possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License (class “E”) and have an acceptable driving record.
OTHERSKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the operating procedures and maintenance of equipment operated.
- General knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations in equipment operation.
- Working knowledge of traffic laws and regulations related to equipment operated.
- Ability to perform or assist in minor maintenance and repair of equipment operated.
- Ability to perform physical labor required of the position.
- Ability to identify operating problems of equipment assigned.
The employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear; routinely to use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, controls, climb or balance; occasionally to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORKENVIRONMENT
The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, extreme heat/cold, near moving mechanical parts, and is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally works in high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
