Overview

Public Works Worker I and II are part of a career series for Public Works Worker I (Trainee), II, III and Public Works Lead worker. Classes in this series perform a wide variety of unskilled, semi‑skilled and skilled work in all phases of maintenance, repair and construction of roads, flood control, and other County public works facilities; and do other related work as required.

The anticipated salary range for hire is $50,731.20 - $71,905.60 annually.

Distinguishing Characteristics
  • Public Works Worker I: Under close supervision, performs a wide variety of work in all areas of public works; becomes skilled in driving and operating light trucks and other motorized equipment; acquires skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Public Works Worker II: Under supervision, performs a wide variety of unskilled to skilled work in all areas of public works as a first‑level journeyman, including driving and operating light trucks, skip‑loaders, mowers, rollers, sweepers, small tractors and attachments, paint stripers and tree‑crew equipment; may operate heavy equipment in apprenticeship or as required on a temporary basis.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of tools and materials commonly used in road, flood control and other public works maintenance work; and operation of gasoline/diesel‑powered equipment.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; mechanical aptitude; do work relating to the maintenance, repair, and construction of roads, including tree and traffic facilities, bridges, flood control and other public works facilities; do heavy and manual labor; follow oral and written directions; keep simple records; work cooperatively with others;

and learn to perform duties of higher level positions.

Education and Experience

Public Works Worker I: No additional experience.

Public Works Worker II: Equivalent to one year of experience at the Public Works Worker I (Trainee) level.

Licenses and Certificates

Public Works Worker I: A valid driver’s license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Public Works Worker II: A valid driver’s license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA Class A driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
