Public Works Technician - Highway Department

This position involves responsibility for performing semi‑skilled level work in the performance of a variety of public works maintenance and repair tasks. Work performed under varying degrees of supervision depending upon the assignment. Does related work as required.

Good knowledge of the common principles, practices, tools, equipment and safety precautions of the mechanical and construction trades; working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of specialized automotive equipment; ability to learn principle and procedures relating to the operation and maintenance of a public services system; good general intelligence; good observational skills; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

willingness to perform manual labor; mechanical aptitude; dependability; ability to get along well with others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

• Raking, tamping, shoveling, loading, unloading of asphalt, cold patch and bulk construction materials to include excavation and back filling for all types of public services construction and/or repairs;
• Participates in the construction, extension, repair, maintenance and cleaning of streets, roads and other public work buildings;
• Cleaning/clearing debris, snow, ice, leaves, trash, etc. from streets, park areas, sidewalks, culverts, catch basins, basins, storm water pipes, sewer pipes, streets and bridges;
• Use and maintenance of construction tools and equipment such as air compressors, jack hammers, concrete mixers, pumps, mixing machines and curb machines, and stone crushers;
• Performance of unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks in connection with grass cutting, trimming trees and shrubs, raking leaves, cutting brush; maintaining trees, flower beds and turf area; planting and transplanting trees; wood cutting and the maintenance of bridge and signage;
• Operation of all public services types of equipment in connection with: removal of snow, construction, trimming, street construction, maintenance, paving, building maintenance and lawn care;
• Preventative maintenance of equipment, utilities and facilities used/operated in public services;
• Performance of other related skills and unskilled public services functions as required;
• Repairs windows, doors, floors, walls, and other parts of buildings;
• Does interior and exterior painting;
• Helps to install and repair general plumbing, electrical and HVAC equipment;
• Assists a skilled mechanic and individual performs semi‑skilled repair work in connection with the repair, maintenance and overhauling of buildings equipment and systems;
• Takes part in general grounds maintenance activities;
