Overview
Performs skilled work and related duties in the operation of heavy mechanized equipment to construct, repair, replace, and maintain City utilities for the Stormwater Division of the Water Department.
PrimaryDuties & Responsibilities
- Operates heavy equipment such as combination jet truck (VAC-CON), bobcat excavator, skidsteer, backhoes, and loaders, performs tasks such as grading, hauling material, pipeline excavation and backfill, and snow removal; services, maintains, and makes minor mechanical adjustments and minor repairs on assigned equipment; may act as lead worker and may assist in training other employees in equipment operation; and performs additional duties as assigned.
- Education:
High School Diploma or GED. Selected candidate will be required to submit proof, in the form of official transcripts, of the highest level of education attained by the applicant that is indicated on the application and/or resume prior to date of hire. - Experience:
At least 3 years progressively responsible experience in the operation of medium and heavy equipment. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. - Knowledge:
Working knowledge of the practices and techniques of heavy equipment operation and maintenance; knowledge of safety practices common to the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment. Knowledge of stormwater construction and repair. - Abilities:
Ability to understand and follow complex instructions relative to job assignment; perform strenuous physical work; and work overtime, call back duty, and standby with a thirty-minute response time. - Skills:
Skill in the operation of heavy equipment. - LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR EQUIPMENT
REQUIRED:
Colorado Class A Commercial Driver's License. Colorado Water Class II Distribution Operator Certificate or Colorado Wastewater Class II Collections Certificate or the ability to obtain within a specific time period as directed by departmental policies. Water certificates from other states will be evaluated on an individual basis. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.)
in the course of their employment.
- Physical Demands:
Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds; considerable hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of heavy equipment and vehicles; speech communication to give instructions and provide technical direction; vision read manuals and monitor equipment gauges; hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals. - Work Environment:
Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, and fumes. Some work may be performed in trenches and/or confined spaces. - Equipment Used:
Operates heavy equipment common to utility maintenance and construction.

- Personal Leave:
The city provides twenty-four (24) hours of personal leave to full-time employees each January 1 following the completion of one year of continuous service and 2080 worked hours (excluding over-time). A pro-rated portion of personal leave is provided after the first six (6) months of continuous service and again at twelve (12) months continuous service. - Annual Leave:
Employees accrue Annual Leave after the successful completion of their introductory period. Accruals for annual leave for full-time regular employees are:- 0-2 years of service 12 days
- 2-4 years of service 13 days
- 4 years of service 14 days
- 6 years of service 15 days
- 8 years of service 16 days
- 10 years of service 17 days
- 12 years of service 18 days
- 14 years of service 20 days
- 15 years of service 23 days
