Role

The Fiber Splicer position will splice and test fiber optic cables in aerial, underground, and indoor field environments. The position requires attention to detail in setting up splice locations, termination points, splice quality, safety, and general fiber optic construction. The role includes on-call and shift duties, with weekends and holidays required.

Responsibilities
  • Splice on new construction and restoration for various cable types (Loose Tube, Ribbon, Micro, OPGW, etc.).
  • Conduct and validate testing of network equipment per Crown Castle Fiber procedures and equipment manufacturer specifications.
  • Coordinate with the Network Operations Center for final acceptance and testing of new equipment and rings; tests include provisioning, alarm monitoring to the NMS, and switch protection.
  • Use fiber optic, SONET, Ethernet and SDH test equipment (OTDR, PMD, Optical Spectrum Analyzer, BER Test Sets, sniffers).
  • Perform site surveys to ensure quality installation of racks, power plants, fiber cable; report defects to the Operations Manager or OSP Project Engineer.
  • Label and tag equipment and cabling according to Network Engineering Diagrams.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot problems independently, in coordination with the NOC/customer.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for nights and weekends.
  • Perform other duties as required; apply hardware and software updates to remote site equipment as needed.
  • Maintain records of work including splice diagrams, patch panels, and test results.
  • Interface with customers and carriers to support service delivery and assurance.
  • Work independently for extended periods and respond to customer troubles on a 24-hour basis.
  • Collaborate with NOC, Sales, Engineering, and customers.
Education/Certifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree or equivalent work experience preferred
  • Valid Driver’s license required
Experience /

Minimum Requirements
  • One (1)+ years of experience in splicing, testing, installation, maintenance and repair of fiber optic networks and/or Outside Plant fiber; or minimum two (2) years of field or military experience.
  • Prefer experience with base station equipment, NMS, equipment installation and maintenance, and low-power broadcast equipment; experience in construction, installation, and maintenance phases.
  • Prefer use of volt/ohm meter, RF power meter, frequency sweep equipment, spectrum analyzer, fault locating equipment, and battery conductance meters.
  • Knowledge of Outside Plant Construction techniques (aerial & underground) preferred
  • Working knowledge of NESC, NEC and OSHA standards preferred
  • Experience splicing ribbon and loose tube cables
  • A valid driver’s license is required to drive Crown Castle vehicles; pre-employment background check with MVR will be conducted where applicable
