Position: Seasonal Student Trainee (Biological Science Technician)
Location: Republic

Overview

This internship program provides students enrolled in education environments (high schools, colleges, trade schools and other qualifying educational institutions) with paid opportunities to explore Federal careers. This position is established to provide a meaningful employment opportunity in the Biological Science Technician Occupation.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in conducting surveys and research on a variety of plants and animals.
  • Monitor and identify species using field guides and dichotomous keys.
  • Utilize methods such as pulling or cutting to remove high volumes of invasive plants.
  • Capture geospatial data using handheld GPS devices and tablets.
  • Operate power equipment while maintaining assigned equipment in working order.

At the GS-05 level, duties will be more complex and have less supervisory oversight. You may also provide guidance to others as well as provide logistical support.

Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Direct Deposit:
    Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Pathways Agreement:
    Pathways participant agreement is required.
  • Incidental Driving:
    You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. You will sign an affidavit each year certifying possession of a valid State driver’s license and provide copies as required, and you may submit driving records as needed. Indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver’s license.
  • Uniform:
    You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Government Housing:
    Housing is not available.
  • Trial Period:
    The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period.
  • Minimum Age Requirement:
    Applicants must be at least 18 years old, or 16 years old with specified conditions (high school graduation or equivalent, vocational training, school authorities’ agreement for employment, or being enrolled in secondary school under a formal student employment program).
Qualifications
  • All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement (02/03/2026) unless otherwise stated.
  • To be eligible for this pathway position you must
    :
  • 1) Be enrolled in a degree-seeking program or a 1-year certificate program
  • 2) Be enrolled on a half-time basis
  • 3) Have a minimum 2.0 grade average
  • 4) Attending an accredited educational institution
  • 5) Provide transcripts with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking
  • 6) Be enrolled for the next semester/quarter following the period of this vacancy

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment, and reflect full and/or part-time hours worked.

To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

  • EXPERIENCE
    :
    At least six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience for a total of one year. Examples include conducting biological field studies and surveys and assembling information; following standardized procedures to collect data; using statistical methods to test field data; assisting in vegetation or soils mapping; developing methods to control weeds or plant diseases.
  • EDUCATION
    :
    Successful completion of at least two full years of college with relevant coursework; submit transcripts.
  • Combination of education and experience as described above to total 100 percent qualification; include hours per week and transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
