Position Summary

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be part of a large, multidisciplinary research team at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), working with collaborators across Australia and internationally. The role focuses on linkage research projects examining strategies to improve the prevention and treatment of opioid dependence, as well as the health and social outcomes of people who experience incarceration. Reporting to a Scientia Professor, the Post-Doctoral Fellow will undertake advanced data management and statistical analysis of large, complex linked datasets, contribute to rigorous study design, and ensure high standards of data governance and ethics.

The role includes interpreting and communicating research findings, leading and contributing to peer-reviewed publications, supporting grant development, and assisting with the supervision of higher degree research students. The position requires strong project management skills, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to high-quality, policy-relevant research that contributes to improved health outcomes and social impact to meaningful work that advances positive social change across communities.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake advanced data management and statistical analysis of large, complex linked datasets.
  • Contribute to rigorous study design and ensure high standards of data governance and ethics.
  • Interpret and communicate research findings; lead and contribute to peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Support grant development and assist with supervision of higher degree research students.
  • Demonstrate strong project management skills and ability to work independently.
  • Contribute to policy-relevant research that improves health outcomes and social impact.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Completed PhD in a relevant discipline (public health, epidemiology, social science, biostatistics, health economics) or equivalent knowledge through education, training and/or experience.
  • Relevant experience in a health/medical field.
  • Demonstrated experience with methodologically rigorous data collection and/or analyses.
  • High level communication skills and ability to work both independently and within a collaborative research team.
  • Evidence of research activity in at least one of NDARC’s core workplan areas.
  • Strong research output with peer‑reviewed publications and success in attracting research funding.
  • Proven ability to write manuscripts for publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Understanding of UNSW’s aims, objectives and values, and relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to relevant training.
