About

The Role

We are seeking qualified Archaeological Field Technicians to provide as‑needed support for projects throughout California. Candidates with professional archaeological field experience are preferred. Candidates should be familiar with the practical requirements of archaeological survey, site recording, evaluation, and monitoring.

This position is listed for California and is available for any of the Central Coast
, So Cal , and Nor Cal regions, with particular interest in candidates located in San Luis Obispo
, Santa Barbara
, and Fresno counties.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist Archaeological Project Managers and Field Directors during archaeological tasks that can include survey, site recording, evaluation, monitoring, and laboratory studies.
  • Prepare written information, such as field forms and site records.
  • Work closely with other cultural resources staff, Rincon’s clients, and Native American representatives.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by your supervisor(s).
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • At least one (1) year of professional experience identifying, documenting, and evaluating cultural resources of significance (a Master’s degree may be used in lieu of one year of field experience).
  • Must be able to work independently and make on‑the‑ground decisions during monitoring and other fieldwork.
  • Experience with Trimble and/or Garmin GPS data collection.
  • Must be able to hike 10-12 miles per day in often difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions while carrying 25 lbs.
  • This is an As‑Needed position – must be available to work extended field rotations (10-12 days at a time).
  • Ability to travel without restrictions and have reliable means of transportation.
  • Strong organizational skills.
Strongly Desired
  • Familiarity with California prehistoric and historical cultural resources, and the culture history of California.
  • Experience working with utilities (Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, San Diego Gas and Electric, Gas Company, etc.).
  • Field experience in California.
  • Experience with CEQA and the NHPA.
Compensation

The base hourly range for this temporary position is $24.00–$37.00 per hour. At Rincon, our salary ranges are based on the market median of similar jobs, according to third‑party salary benchmark surveys. The base pay that is actually offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Additional Employment Information

Individuals offered employment must successfully complete a pre‑employment drug screening as a condition of employment. Additionally, those hired who may be assigned to federal projects will be subject to further drug testing, including screening for cannabinoids (THC/marijuana), in compliance with the Drug‑Free Workplace Act of 1988 and other applicable federal regulations, which take precedence over California state and local laws.
