Provides leadership, guidance and direction to work crews in facility/parks operations and maintenance as well as project delivery. This position performs a variety of routine and non-routine facility and park maintenance duties relating to environmental protection, facility operation or construction, structural maintenance, pool operations and janitorial services. The incumbent provides leadership and project coordination in dealing with both internal and external resources and contractors.
It is a requirement of this position to live on or be willing to relocate to Salt Spring Island to meet operational requirements.
KeyDuties & Responsibilities
- Works and supports supervisor with providing operational direction as well as supporting, guiding and directing staff.
- Leads and directs work teams in park facilities' development and maintenance tasks in an efficient, professional and safe manner.
- Undertakes facility maintenance tasks including janitorial servicing, repair, and construction of park facilities and pool operations.
- Organizes, prioritizes, and directs daily staff work schedules .
- Leads project coordination on small and medium-sized projects including pre-planning, execution, and post project work including project documentation and presentations.
- Oversees staff and contractors while demonstrating problem solving abilities and identifying solutions.
- Documents pre-project planning work related to Work Safe BC regulations, environmental protection, cultural site protection, and other municipal, provincial, or federal regulations.
- Inspects park facilities and structures related to visitor safety and regulatory compliance including completion of inspection documents.
- Provides training and direction to work teams, including the safe use of equipment.
- Oversees site safety including safety planning and documentation with contractors and staff.
- Contributes to the review of staff performance while fostering a positive work environment.
- Provides written and verbal reports relating to park and facilities operations.
- Ensures hazardous conditions are identified and appropriate steps are taken to mitigate the hazard. Responsible for notifying the Senior Parks Maintenance Supervisor and developing mitigation plans.
- Provides guidance, direction and support to internal and external resources.
- Conducts vegetation management including basic chainsaw operations.
- Conducts routine clean-up of all park facilities and grounds including the removal of household and unhoused waste debris.
- Operates a variety of CRD Park vehicles, trailers, equipment
- Provides information to park visitors related to park regulations as required and reports violations to the appropriate authority.
- Ensures field supplies and materials inventories are maintained.
- Reviews weekly staff report to parks and addresses noted deficiencies.
- Performs duties of other Park Maintenance Worker positions.
- Ensures all work is performed in accordance with Worksafe BC and follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD.

- Experience with parks and recreation facilities maintenance and operations including pool operations.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
- Demonstrated experience providing guidance and direction to staff and supporting and leading small crews.
- Demonstrated experience providing clear and succinct communication and direction to staff while working collaboratively with internal and external interested parties.
- Proven ability to write project plans and summaries as well as draft correspondence for internal and external stakeholders.
- Sound knowledge of park operations and facilities.
- Sound knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment commonly used in parks construction, installation, repair and maintenance, including, horticulture and landscaping.
- Knowledge and understanding of WorkSafeBC practices/protocols, Workers' Compensation Act and OHS Regulations and other relevant safety statutes.
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of small two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
- Ability to perform a variety of maintenance functions within regional parks.
- Knowledge of CRD Parks policies, procedures, regulatory bylaws and environmental issues related to and/or affecting Parks.
- Proven experience in public relations with team leadership and bylaw education.
- Ability to use initiative, problem solve, use good judgement planning and organizing work.
- Ability to operate Microsoft programs including outlook, power point, excel, and word.
