OverviewUnder the direction of a Caltrans Tree Maintenance Supervisor, the Tree Maintenance Worker performs tree‑care and highway maintenance work, climbs trees, operates equipment, controls traffic, and removes snow during winter months. The position requires travel to the eight counties of the District, up to 80% of the year, and works a 4/10 year‑around schedule.
Responsibilities- Climb trees to a height of 40 feet or more using ropes, spurs, and safety equipment.
- Trim, remove, and lower limbs and branches, cut surfaces, and treat cut surfaces to protect from fungi and insects.
- Operate and maintain tree climbing and trimming equipment, power saws, and hand tools.
- Operate snow removal, abrasive, and salt spreading equipment and perform winter snow removal.
- Control traffic at chain control points and perform traffic control during emergencies and special projects.
- Operate and maintain equipment assigned to the crew, including passenger vehicles, utility bodies, construction equipment, and heavy trucks.
- Plant, cultivate, irrigate, and maintain trees, cut brush, and control weeds along the right‑of‑way.
- Record crew report forms, equipment checks, fuel, and material usage reports.
- Class C driver’s license (Class A or B desirable).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Experience with tree climbing, trimming, and removal techniques and equipment operation.
- Valid Class C driver’s license required for all state vehicle operation.
