Overview
Responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating and coordinating the nursing care provided to a select group of patients for wound and ostomy care within the context of the organization’s nursing services. Wound care nurses specialize in the proper management of wound care by treating and monitoring wounds that are the result of disease, injury, or medical treatments. The job requires that a wound care nurse provides care that will optimally and safely heal various types of wounds, including but not limited to surgical openings, ulcers, decubitus ulcers, feeding tube sites, and abscesses.
Their work requires that they assess wounds, create and implement treatment plans, monitor infections and signs of infection, and clean wounds. The nurses must also have advanced skills to assess symptoms that require management of complex wounds. Wound care nurses will also educate other healthcare members in the area of proper wound care.
- Prescribe, delegate and coordinate nursing care for wound and ostomy patients.
- Assess wounds, develop and implement treatment plans, and monitor progress and signs of infection.
- Provide care to wounds resulting from disease, injury, or medical treatments and ensure safe, effective healing.
- Educate other healthcare team members on proper wound care practices.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes.
Education: Graduated from a school of nursing
Licensure: Is personally responsible for obtaining, and maintaining, a current RN license within the hiring state and/or compact licensure in which nursing duties are performed and must meet all state board of nursing requirements.
