Overview of Unit / Department
500 Surgical is a fast paced unit consisting of 25 beds and a wide variety of patients. We commonly tend to patients that are post op for elective joint replacement procedures, colectomy, colostomy, gall bladder removal, appendix removal, amputations, fractures, mastectomy, bladder tumor and more. We also have medical overflow patients. Working on the surgical floor is hard but rewarding work.
Maintaining accurate intake / output and encouraging early ambulation is essential to the post op patient. Following strict infection prevention measures is needed to provide the best care for those who need us. Teamwork is essential to success.

The Medical-Surgical nurse is responsible for managing the care of the adult or geriatric patient experiencing general medical conditions or general surgical procedures. The nurse must be able to assess patient condition, administer medications, change dressings, monitor vital signs, keep records and provide patients and families with support and education. The Medical-Surgical nurse maintains a wide array of medical care knowledge in order to care for a diverse group of patients.
Education Required:
Graduate of an accredited nursing program or NLN approved program;
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
Experience Preferred:
Previous nursing experience
Skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrate effective leadership abilities; time management; strong critical thinking/problem solving; flexibility and ability to work in a multi-tasking environment.
Licensure/Certification/Registration Required: RN license active in the state of Missouri
