The UCI Health Department of Hematology/Oncology provides expert consultation and treatment for a broad spectrum of blood and solid‑tumor cancers. The Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is Orange County’s only National Cancer Institute‑designated comprehensive cancer center and offers the only adult hematopoietic stem‑cell transplant services in the county.
About the PositionThis role is for a Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology Division, HSCT/CT Program. The NP will work independently within an interprofessional team to provide comprehensive care for patients in the inpatient setting at UCI Irvine Hospital, including multi‑disciplinary care coordination, education, monitoring and communication with patients, families and referring physicians.
Key Responsibilities- Provide advanced nursing care and education for patients with hematologic malignancies, stem‑cell transplants and cellular therapy.
- Manage acute or critical care, routine inpatient care, chronic stable medical conditions and related procedures such as bone‑marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures.
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, diagnose and manage complex cancer‑related symptoms and treatment‑related side effects.
- Coordinate supportive care interventions (pain, fatigue, nausea, depression, sleep disturbances, cachexia).
- Counsel patients and families on prognosis, goals of care and advance care planning.
- Prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
- Current, active and unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
- Current, active and unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
- Current, active and unrestricted California Furnishing license and DEA registration.
- Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey medical information to diverse audiences.
- Strong customer‑service orientation and ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurses and other health‑care professionals.
- Proficiency in protecting PHI and adhering to privacy and security policies.
- Knowledge of oncology symptom management, palliative care principles and supportive care interventions.
- Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional privileges prior to hiring.
- Understanding of California state statutes relevant to nursing practice.
- Familiarity with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and solid‑tumor carcinomas, including colon, breast and prostate cancers.
- Experience in an inpatient or outpatient hematology/oncology setting.
- Experience with bone‑marrow transplant care and cellular therapy is preferred.
- NP National Board Certification (Family/Individual FNP-BC or FNP-C) – effective February 2018.
- NP National Board Certification (Adult/Gerontology AGPCNP-BC or AGNP-C).
- NP National Board Certification (Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC‑AG).
- NP National Board Certification (Adult NP-BC or Adult NP-C).
- Current BLS and ACLS certification.
- Hematology/Oncology experience of at least two years; preferred experience in Hematopoietic Stem‑Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy.
