SummaryThe Director of Communications is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive district-wide communications and public relations program designed to maintain public trust, ensure legal compliance, and strengthen community support for the school district. This position leads internal and external communications, manages district messaging and media relations, and supports the Superintendent and Board of Education in advancing the district’s mission, goals, and public image.
EssentialDuties And Responsibilities
- Develops, coordinates, and implements a comprehensive communications and public relations program for the district.
- Manages and maintains the district website, ensuring ADA compliance, accuracy, accessibility, and timely updates; monitors usage and recommends improvements.
- Oversees all district social media platforms, including development of content, posting schedules, and guidelines for appropriate and effective use.
- Develops and distributes press releases; builds positive relationships with print, radio, television, and online media; responds to media inquiries and coordinates press coverage of district events and programs.
- Manages official district messaging, including newsletters, parent and community communications, emergency notifications, and school closings, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with district goals.
- Actively promotes positive stories, recognitions, and district accomplishments involving students, staff, and programs.
- Attends and publicizes district and school events; supports community partnership initiatives and works to enhance the overall image and reputation of the district.
- Attends Board of Education meetings; coordinates recognitions and assists the Board and Superintendent in establishing and evaluating public relations and marketing goals.
- Provides organizational and administrative support for district communications related to improvement planning, surveys, grant initiatives, employment postings, and operational departments as requested.
- Assists with management of the district calendar and back‑to‑school communications and planning.
- Provides training and guidance to staff on effective communication practices and appropriate use of social media and digital communication tools.
- Ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations related to public records, accessibility, student privacy, and communications.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
- May supervise communications staff, media specialists, or clerical support personnel as assigned.
- Provides leadership, guidance, and performance feedback to assigned staff.
- Must successfully complete all required background checks in accordance with state law and Board of Education policy.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Education, or a related field required;
Master’s degree preferred. - Experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or school district communications preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with media relations, digital communications, and public engagement.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret laws, policies, and procedures related to public communications, student privacy, and accessibility.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to write clear, concise, and engaging content for diverse audiences.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, administrators, students, parents, media, and community stakeholders.
- Ability to work with basic budget information, analytics (e.g., website and social media metrics), and communication data.
