Confidential review of materials will begin immediately and continue until an appointment is made. The full salary range for the Associate Vice Chancellor position is $161,500 – $326,300. The annual salary the university reasonably expects to pay for this position is up to $285,000.

Compensation will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) is seeking a strategic, creative, and collaborative leader to serve as the Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (AVC/CCMO). As a key member of the Chancellor’s leadership team, the AVC/CCMO will develop and direct communications and marketing strategies for the University, advancing UCR’s brand and reputation nationally and internationally.

Reporting to the Chancellor, the AVC/CCMO is the principal administrator responsible for advancing the brand, elevating the reputation, and enhancing widespread understanding of the mission of UCR. The role will work closely with the Chancellor, Associate Chancellor, and other key campus executives and stakeholders to align the campus’s voice in storytelling and messaging to engage diverse audiences locally, nationally, and globally.

Requirements Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Graduate degree (Required). Advanced degree or specific professional development in communications and marketing organization (Preferred).
Experience Requirements
  • 10–15 years of related experience.
  • Previous supervisory/managerial experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working in higher education.
Minimum Requirements
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, technical aspects, and appropriate applications.
  • Expert skill to create, develop, and implement effective long and short‑term strategic communications plans.
  • Expert skill in advising and consulting management to ensure desired institutional messaging to target audiences.
  • Expert written, verbal, interpersonal communication, active listening, and political acumen skills.
  • Expert knowledge and skills in financial and personnel administration and management.
  • Expert management skills to select, train, lead, direct, guide, and motivate professional staff.
  • Expert analytical, critical‑thinking, project management, and problem‑recognition skills.
  • Expert skills to ensure high‑quality work within budget and time constraints.
  • Significant experience in leading results‑driven communications and marketing teams.
  • Proven experience working collaboratively with senior leadership to develop communication strategies for internal and external audiences.
  • Experience managing a complex communications and marketing organization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge of the location, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education.
  • Significant experience in developing and implementing successful, high‑level organizational marketing, public relations programs, and digital communication strategies.
  • Expert skills in dealing with formal and informal news media, including knowledge of local, regional, and national news outlets.
  • Advanced knowledge of marketing, advertising, and public relations practices, with experience implementing long‑ and short‑range programs.
  • Experience implementing and overseeing digital marketing initiatives in web, email, advertising, and social media.
  • Expert presentation and public‑speaking skills; ability to represent UCR in public forums.
  • Experience supporting community engagement through communications and marketing.
  • Knowledge of the teaching, research, and public service roles of major research universities.
