Responsibilities
  • Operates heat-treating equipment and makes settings and adjustments to obtain specified mechanical properties per material documentation.
  • Check incoming materials and determine proper furnace settings and adjustments according to heat treat specifications.
  • Monitor heat treating equipment to maintain proper settings and adjustments.
  • Determine appropriate heat treatment procedures for all materials in collaboration with appropriate personnel.
  • Record temperature and time cycle data and post data per established procedures.
  • Move products or heat-treating supplies within the department or to designated areas of the plant.
  • Perform daily and preventative maintenance on heat-treating equipment and tools; effect minor repairs as necessary and assist with major repairs.
  • Perform 5S cleaning, inspection, and lubrication of equipment and the department.
  • Visually or with precision measuring instruments verify product specifications (e.g., tensile strength, shear tolerance, micro hardness).
  • Perform or direct cleaning operations before, during, and after heat treating.
  • Ensure production quality and quantity within the heat-treating area.
  • Actively participate in problem solving, team-building, and other team activities to improve processes, productivity, and quality; communicate effectively and assist other department members as required.
  • Perform system accuracy tests as required.
  • Set up and perform temperature uniformity surveys.

Equipment / Process Responsibilities
  • Responsible for start-up, shut down, and condition monitoring of all heat-treat equipment.
  • Set up multiple loads across and various types of heat-treating equipment; perform repairs and keep the department clean.
Material or Product Responsibilities
  • Perform duties requiring close attention to work, supporting documentation, specifications, and other requirements.
  • Ensure work is performed accurately to meet quality and performance requirements; verify results with visual inspection and precision measuring instruments.
Responsibilities of Work of Others
  • Maintain clear and accurate communication with team and other personnel regarding quality and production flow. Train employees of equal or lower classification in heat-treating operations and procedures as used by the company.
System Responsibility
  • Maintain NADCAP certification through audit preparation and performance; review industry standards when revised to ensure compliance and equipment capability to change.
Safety
  • Maintain good housekeeping and knowledge of heat-treating equipment safety; adhere to company safety rules.
Initiative and Ingenuity
  • Show initiative solving problems associated with setup and operation of at least two heat-treating pieces of equipment concurrently; adapt tooling and shop aids to complete operations.
  • Suggest improvements to workflow or equipment operation and take on additional tasks as needed.
Work Environment
  • Work in a machine shop environment with typical industrial noise and temperature fluctuations.
  • Unavoidable hazards include cuts, bruises, muscle strain, burns; exposure to metalworking fluids, airborne particles, and extreme high temperatures. Appropriate protective wear is required.
Efforts
  • Physical — Able to lift up to 100 pounds; manually adjust equipment; reach, bend, and stretch; operate multiple heat-treating machines concurrently; typically stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Mental — Work can be highly repetitive; setup and adjustments may require improvisation; interpret technical documentation; run at least two pieces of equipment concurrently and organize workflow efficiently.
  • Visual — Close attention to detail; read precision instruments; visually check work pieces for quality.
