High school diploma, GED or vocational school recommended but not limited.
Experience90 days or more working as an apprentice welder.
TrainingCompany provided on-the-job training.
Specific Knowledge/SkillsMust be a certified welder who possesses a written certification from an employer or certifying agent, such as governmental agency, and professional or technical association, verifying that worker’s production of specified welds meets prescribed standards. Welders are classified according to welding place on work piece and their individual skills. Will be required to pass company administered production subarc qualification test.
EssentialJob Duties And Responsibilities
- Sets up and operates an arc welding machine that welds together metal components of products, as specified by blueprints, layouts, WPS and operating charts.
- Welds flat, cylindrical, or irregular parts that may be clamped, tack welded or otherwise positioned.
- Positions weld line parallel to carriage, pushes buttons to control electrode on welding head, and over weld joint to weld linear joints.
- Adjusts length off radial arm to position electrode over weld joints when welding radial joints.
- Clamps cylindrical work pieces onto turning rolls under stationary head to weld cylindrical joints.
- Threads specified electrode wire from reel through feed rolls and welding head.
- Turns welding head to set specified angle of electrode.
- Fills hopper with specified flux and directs nozzle to gravity feed over weld line.
- Sets current voltage and slope and synchronizes feed of wire and flux with speed of welding action.
- Starts machine and observes meters and gauges, or observes welding action for compliance with procedures.
- Visually examines welds for adherence to specification.
- May grind welded surfaces.
- May make trial run before welding and record set up in operating data.
- May layout, fit, and tack work pieces together.
- May preheat work piece using hand torch.
- May reweld defected joints using hand welding equipment.
- May remove surplus slag, flux, and spatter using brush, portable grinder, and hand scraper.
- May operate machine equipped with two or more heads.
- Parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
- May chip off excess weld, slag, and spatter using hand scraper or power chipper.
- May preheat work piece using hand torch or heating furnace.
- May position and clamp work pieces together or assemble them in jig or fixture.
- May tack assemblies together.
- May cut metal plates or structural shapes.
- Will be required to climb and/or work at heights exceeding 6 feet, and frequently lift up to but not exceeding 100 lbs.
