This position is located in Yosemite National Park, in the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection Division. Occupancy of government quarters is required.
Major DutiesThis position serves as the principal staff and operations officer for the management and supervisor of the majority of Ranger activities within Yosemite National Park. You will provide overall leadership, coordination and direction for field law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency medical services, resources protection and prosecution of crimes. The Yosemite Ranger Activities program supervised by this position is the most complex in the National Park Service.
The Law enforcement program is a complex mixture of prevention and reaction with over 6000 incidents annually. The Search and Rescue Program is very complex with over 250 incidents annually and strong involvement with outside agency cooperators. Formal agreements exist with five county governments and with the State of California, Office of Emergency Services. The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Program is one of the most complex in the Service handling over 800 basic and advanced life support incidents annually and involves working through agreements with seven hospitals, NPS-WASO, US Public Health Service and the State of California EMS Office.
Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000 foot high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno.
Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.
