Location: California & Washington (Travel Required)
Salary Range: $160,000 – $180,000 annually
Position OverviewThe Health & Safety Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership and hands‑on oversight of a comprehensive health and safety program across multiple regions and project sites. This role ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations while driving a proactive, high‑performance safety culture. The Director will partner closely with senior leadership, project management, and field operations to identify and mitigate risk, implement best practices, and ensure the highest possible degree of safety for employees.
This position requires a self‑starting, field‑ready professional with strong leadership, communication, and technical expertise who thrives in a fast‑paced construction/engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities- Provide leadership and oversight of all health and safety policies, programs, and initiatives
- Develop, implement, and align health and safety strategy with organizational goals and critical risk profiles
- Oversee and mentor regional Health & Safety Officers to ensure effective deployment of safety resources across all projects
- Serve as the organization’s health and safety subject matter expert
- Ensure compliance through audits, inspections, risk assessments, and root cause analyses
- Monitor safety performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives
- Promote safety ownership at all levels of the organization and support the “philosophy to behavior” approach
- Coach and mentor leadership, supervision, and field personnel to build internal safety capability
- Investigate accidents and incidents, identify root causes, and support workers’ compensation and risk management processes
- Develop and deliver health and safety training, presentations, and safety programs
- Lead safety committee meetings and promote engagement through communication and education
- Ensure compliance with all permitting, renewals, amendments, and regulatory requirements
- Track, analyze, and report safety statistics, trends, and performance data to senior leadership
- Participate in customer prequalification processes, audits, pre‑construction meetings, and safety reviews
- Manage health and safety‑related vendors, proposals, equipment, services, and invoicing
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies and represent the organization on health and safety matters
- Respond to emergencies and after‑hours incidents as required
- Maintain accurate safety records, permits, and training documentation
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) – required
- OSHA 30 and OSHA 500 certifications
- HAZWOPER certification
Experience & Skills
- 15+ years of direct health and safety experience
- Extensive experience in engineering, construction, or contracting environments
- Strong knowledge of occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Proven ability to lead teams across multiple regions and job sites
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety reporting systems
- Highly proactive, self‑motivated, and able to collaborate at all organizational levels
- Strong English speaking and writing skills
- Ability to travel routinely to job sites throughout California and Washington
- Ability to climb stairs and navigate active construction sites
- Ability to carry equipment weighing up to 10 pounds
- Work environment includes both office settings and outdoor job sites in all seasons
