Job Description & Duties

At the Department of Transportation, Division of Equipment (DOE), the incumbent will work in a shop environment under the direction of a Caltrans Highway Mechanic Supervisor. The Lead worker acts in a lead capacity to a group of CT Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Automobile Mechanics, Helpers and Apprentices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Making accident damage estimates and job orders on incoming jobs.
  • Assigning jobs, checking work, providing instructions, and aiding with difficult mechanical problems.
  • Performing hands‑on work in the construction, inspection, diagnosis, repair and servicing of automobiles, trucks, tractors, personnel hoists, spray equipment, loaders, graders, snowplows, pumps, air compressors, diesel and gasoline engines and similar equipment used in the Caltrans fleet.
  • Completing various repair records and reports.
  • Using computer equipment to input and retrieve data and performing other related tasks.
  • Assuming responsibility for reasonable safeguards, proper use and handling of materials, equipment and facilities.

Must possess a valid class C driver’s license. Job assignments may require travel, rotation, changes of shift, work hours, and workdays.

Special Requirements
  • Valid California Driver’s License (CDL) with CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements or restrictions.
  • Valid and unrestricted Class C driver’s license.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
Eligibility & Examination

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Lead worker exam. Applicants who are not currently eligible (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or are new to state civil‑services employment must be on the state examination list.
