Salary: $11,993.00 – $16,096.00 per month. New to State candidates hired at minimum salary or alternate range. Hiring an Attorney IV ($13,313) or Attorney III ($12,046) with 5–6+ years experience. Hiring Above Minimum (HAM) 5% adjustment available for qualifying experience.

The Caltrans Sacramento Legal Office seeks a well‑qualified attorney with experience or strong interest in civil litigation to defend Caltrans in tort and employment cases. Trial experience is preferred but not required. Telework may be available; attorneys must appear in Sacramento for depositions, hearings and other statewide obligations.
Minimum Requirements- Attorney IV or Attorney III, as defined in the Classification Specification.
- California bar membership; copy of license required before hiring.
- Valid driver’s license (if operating a state vehicle).
- Eligibility to take the CalHR Attorney IV/Attorney III examination (must be on the state examination list).
- Minimum experience:
5 years for Attorney III, 6+ years for Attorney IV.
- Represent Caltrans in civil litigation, including tort and employment cases.
- Conduct legal research, draft motions, and prepare discovery.
- Advise Caltrans on legal matters related to operations.
- Participate in depositions, hearings and, when required, trial proceedings.
- Experience in civil litigation, with knowledge of discovery, trial procedure and practice in state and federal courts.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
