Job SummaryUnder the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel, the Attorney Supervisor assists with the supervision of a group of attorneys and professional staff involved in litigation and other legal activities. The incumbent may also coordinate more complex or major specialized areas in the Legal Division and/or have statewide responsibility for the Department’s legislative program. Key tasks include planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and reviewing the work of a major legal section, supporting the Assistant Chief Counsel as a legal advisor to top management, preparing legislation and representing the Department before the Legislature, and formulating legal policy.
Responsibilities- Supervise attorneys and professional staff within the Legal Division.
- Coordinate complex and/or major specialized legal areas.
- Assist in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and reviewing major legal work.
- Support the Assistant Chief Counsel as a legal advisor to top management.
- Prepare legislation and represent the Department before the Legislature.
- Formulate legal policy and recommend strategic changes.
- Proficient knowledge of civil litigation laws, regulations, trends, practices, and relevant codes (California Code of Civil Procedure, Evidence Code, Federal Rules, Government Code, Insurance Code, etc.).
- Knowledge of the Department’s mission and statutory environment.
- Experience at a supervisory and/or management level with a program of professional legal staff.
- Breadth and variety of experience as an attorney, Attorney Supervisor, and/or contractor of attorneys, including research, analysis, defense, pursuit, and resolution of civil and administrative cases in courts and legislative forums.
- Ability to act as legal advisor to top management and to formulate legal policy.
Applicants are required to take the CalHR examination for the classification, be on the eligibility list, and submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) no longer than two pages, typed, 12‑point Arial font. The SOQ must be numbered, follow the instructions, and include all required questions. Official, unofficial, or sealed transcripts will be accepted when needed for educational verification. Transcripts and degree equivalency reports for foreign credentials must be provided.
