Base pay range

$95,139.20/yr - $/yr

Note: This recruitment was amended on June 26, 2025 to update the Qualifications, and Supplemental Questions to include applicants who have submitted an application for registration with the BBS as an AMFT or ACSW and have had at least one year in an internship in a county run behavioral health setting in good standing (documentation must be attached).

San Mateo County Health's Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) and Correctional Health Services (CHS) are currently hiring Extra Help Psychiatric Social Worker/Marriage & Family Therapist I/II in a range of specialty programs.

Salary details:

  • Psychiatric Social Worker I: $45.74 - $57.18 hourly; $7,928.72 - $9,911.20 monthly; $95,139.20 - $ annually.
  • Psychiatric Social Worker II: $51.43 - $64.32 hourly; $8,914.53 - $11,148.80 monthly; $ - $ annually.

Role context: CHS and BHRS positions provide clinical mental health services, case management, and discharge planning. They may involve interviewing inmate or client patients, collaborating with other agencies, and supporting trauma-informed care. Some positions require weekend and evening hours.

BHRS and CHS program details:

  • BHRS Adult and Older Adult Services provide behavioral health services in outpatient clinics, field settings, shelters, and through community providers. Services target adults with severe functional impairments due to serious mental illness and/or co-occurring conditions.
  • BHRS Child and Youth Services deliver trauma-informed mental health and substance use services for children, youth, and families, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and treatment in various settings (schools, clinics, field-based teams).
  • Residential Youth Treatment at Canyon Oaks Youth Center may require annual training and professional crisis training upon hire.

Note on bilingual clinicians: There is a bilingual pay differential for bilingual-required positions of $90 bi-weekly in addition to the salary.

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • A current license as either a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Marriage & Family Therapist;
  • Strong clinical treatment, assessment, diagnostic, and evaluation skills;
  • Knowledge of counseling, psychotherapy, clinical case management, crisis management, and related treatment modalities;
  • Experience treating adults and youth with serious mental illness;
  • Experience serving adults and/or youth with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders;
  • Experience delivering services in adult/older adult and/or child/youth populations as appropriate;
  • Excellent documentation skills (progress notes, assessments, care plans, etc.);
  • Ability to work with clients from diverse cultures and backgrounds and provide culturally appropriate services;
  • Ability to establish productive working relationships with families, co-workers, professionals, partners, and the public;
  • Extensive knowledge of local community resources and experience with electronic health record systems (e.g., AVATAR, SOARIAN);
  • Fluency in threshold languages (Spanish, Tagalog, Chinese Cantonese/Mandarin, or Russian) and experience providing bilingual clinical services;
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotations and respond to after-hours calls (Youth Services Center and Psychiatric Emergency Services);
  • If not yet registered with the BBS as an AMFT or ACSW, must have submitted the application and have at least one year in an internship in a county-run behavioral health setting in good standing (documentation must be attached).

Additional requirements (Residential Youth Treatment and Correctional Health Services):

  • Residential Youth Treatment:
    Trauma Informed Care principles and experience in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Correctional Health Services: experience in a correctional facility, providing case management for inmates, and delivering clinical mental health services to adults with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders.
