Under the general supervision of the Manager of Perioperative Services, and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for filling the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures, dependent on individual competencies in each surgical specialty. Assists physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures. These functions must be in compliance with the philosophy of the hospital, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies.

• Follow the philosophy of the hospital, standards of practice, and regulations of governing agencies.
• Demonstrate a positive, cooperative attitude and work as a team member with coworkers, management, patients, visitors, and physicians.
• Maintain a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards.
• Demonstrate knowledge of instrument processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages.
• Check room cleanliness, availability of supplies, and equipment for all assigned cases at the beginning of each day.
• Utilize surgeon preference card to select packs, supplies and instruments.
• Perform surgical hand scrub and don sterile gown and gloves according to policy; maintain sterile technique during gowning, gloving, and draping.
• Perform sponge, instrument, and needle counts according to count policy; handle specimens per established policy.
• Transport instruments to decontamination area using approved technique; restock operating rooms to PAR levels.
• Adhere to attendance, punctuality, meal and break time policies; complete work efficiently and independently.
• Participate in department meetings or review materials; communicate information as needed for hospital operations.
• Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to hospital and departmental safety policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate knowledge of hospital-wide emergency management codes, infection control program, and risk management program.

• High School graduate or equivalent required
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist required
• Two years previous experience as an operating room technician desired
• Current BCLS

• Decision making concerning equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization
• Bio hazardous waste disposal
• Housekeeping duties
• Patient care and patient flow
• Complies with hospital practice standards regarding competent performance duties
• Maintains patient confidentiality
• Creates a safe environment in which surgery may take place
• Uses medical equipment in a safe manner
• Provides physical safety for the patient
• Accounts for sponges, needles, instruments, and other potential foreign bodies
• Assists surgeon in scrubbed cases
• Pulls supplies for upcoming cases
• Maintains proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeon and draping patient
• Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts according to count policy
• Transports instruments to decontamination area
• Restocks operating rooms
• Adheres to safety policies including OSHA guidelines and infection control standards
• Demonstrates knowledge of Instrument Processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages
• Follows surgeon preference cards for packs, supplies and instruments
• Maintains a professional attitude and good communication with the team
• Demonstrates knowledge of cultural, spiritual, and aged-related considerations when interacting with patients
