Overview
The City of Monterey is recruiting for an Inspector. This is a full-time position assigned to the Building & Safety Division of the Community Development Department.

Application Process A limited number of applicants who clearly meet the needs of this position in terms of training, experience, education, and other job-related characteristics will be accepted to participate in the selection process. The process includes evaluation and initial screening of the online City application to determine progression, followed by potential written tests, performance exercises, panels, and a final departmental interview.
The Human Resources Department reserves the right to modify components of the examination process. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate will pass a Live Scan fingerprint background check and reference check. Depending on the position, a physical exam including a drug screen and a federal background check may be required to access DoD facilities and systems. Positions requiring work on military installations will involve on-site duties and a background check conducted by the Department of Defense (DoD).
Candidates who progress through all phases will be placed on an eligible list active for 12 months and may be used to fill additional positions, including lower-level, regular part-time, and seasonal roles with similar duties and requirements.

ResponsibilitiesUnder direction, inspect buildings, structures, street improvements and utility connections to ensure construction or alteration work complies with approved plans and City codes and ordinances. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Check plans and consult with architects, developers and builders to ensure compliance with building, fire, and all federal, state, and local code requirements.
- Inspect buildings and related structures to verify compliance with building and fire codes and ordinances; ensure safety and adherence to approved plans and specifications.
- Evaluate materials and methods of construction (wood framing, concrete, steel, lathing, plastering, etc.) for conformity with City code and industry standards.
- Inspect streets openings, sewer repairs, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and storm drains and verify proper installation.
- Inspect existing buildings for hazardous conditions and for residential inspection ordinances; enforce zoning ordinances as needed.
- Issue permits, collect fees, issue abatement notices, and provide information on building and fire code requirements.
- Approve certificates of final inspection and coordinate with other City departments.
- Inspect and verify installation of street openings for utility connections and related construction.
