Job Description and Duties

The position is located in West Sacramento and is under the general direction of the Supervising Tax Auditor.

As an Associate Tax Auditor (ATA) you will independently conduct audits primarily of retailers in the restaurant and cannabis industry, and other business enterprises.

Duties include:

  • Conduct fraud/tax‑evasion audits and may testify in court regarding liabilities determined.
  • Make audit appointments; meet with taxpayers and their representatives; explain audit findings; and prepare audit reports and written correspondence to taxpayers.
  • Travel up to fifty percent of the time, including overnight travel.
  • Work as a mobile worker, spending majority of time at various locations outside home or office.

All positions may be eligible for partial telework under Government Code 14200 for California residents; telework/hybrid schedules require reporting to the office at least a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change.

Special Requirements
  • The employer participates in E‑Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I‑9 information to confirm you are authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Employee must be fingerprinted and successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Position requires travel at least fifty percent of the time, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or overnight travel across the state.
  • Work long irregular hours both in and out of the office at various locations.
Eligibility for Promotional Exams

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications for the Associate Tax Auditor, competition is limited to individuals who meet at least one of the following promotional examination criteria:

  • Has a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA.
  • Is a current or former employee of the legislature for two or more years.
  • Is a current or former non‑elected exempt employee of the executive branch for two or more consecutive years.
  • Is a retired U.S. military personnel honorably discharged from active duty with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty. Applicants must provide a copy of DD‑214 for verification.
