The St. Louis County Department of Transportation is looking for an Engineering Technician IV to apply established technical engineering methods and procedures in the design, development and inspection of roadway construction projects.

The typical starting salary will be $24.83 - $29.80 hourly depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience as well as budgetary considerations. This position will be required to work snow or emergency duty and will receive a $6 per hour increase.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in preparing project cost estimates, inspecting and reviewing construction projects to ensure compliance with construction specifications, plans and procedures.
  • Make minor structural and design changes as needed for conformance with established regulations.
  • Assist in the review and interpretation of construction plans for field crews.
  • Meet with, assess and inspect the work of contractors, consultants and company representatives and resolve issues.
  • Perform a variety of routine field and laboratory testing procedures on construction materials to ensure conformance with specifications and prepare reports of results obtained.
Marginal Functions
  • Perform safety checks of work sites and observe work in progress for compliance with established work procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
  • College level coursework in engineering and mathematics, and five years of experience in roadway construction inspection or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Commercial Driver's License (Class A CDL) required during the initial six-month period of employment. Position will require performing snow removal with a mandatory 12‑hour shift. An additional $6 per hour will be added for snow shifts.
Selection and Appointment

A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above.

Responses provided to the interview questions listed under the Supplemental Question heading of this posting will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. Once questions are scored, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire.

Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire. The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision. All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory.

The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
