ABOUT THE POSITION

The County of Riverside's Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) Self‑Sufficiency Division is recruiting multiple bilingual and non‑bilingual Eligibility Technician I/II positions for McFresh and Cal Works throughout the Desert Region. Locations include:

  • Desert Hot Springs
  • Banning
  • Indio
  • Coachella
  • Cathedral City
  • Mecca
  • Blythe

New hire training requires a mandatory induction training class of approximately 16‑20 weeks. Candidates must attend the entire training period.

Benefits include salary (subject to increases), $10 days paid vacation, sick‑time accrual, a CalPERS defined benefit retirement plan, medical flex benefit ($926.52 monthly), paid vision, short‑term disability, life insurance, voluntary deferred compensation (457), and 12 paid holidays a year.

Teleworking may be requested after an 18‑month probationary period; however, it is not guaranteed.

Interviewers will pre‑record responses to questions via email link. Candidates who meet all requirements will be invited to record their interviews.

SALARY RANGE

Eligibility Technician I: $21.73 – $28.59 hourly

Eligibility Technician II: $23.79 – $32.39 hourly

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Participate in Eligibility Technician Induction Training, including class and on‑the‑job training.
  • Interview applicants and recipients for one or more aid categories to assist in completion of applications and declarations.
  • Determine eligibility in accordance with established procedures; dictate or record information for case records.
  • Interpret program regulations and other materials for applicants, recipients, and the public.
  • Maintain a focus on meeting customer needs and develop effective relationships.
  • Obtain necessary information during phone and in‑person interviews by establishing rapport, explaining purpose, and asking follow‑up questions.
  • Write clear, well‑organized information tailored to the audience.
  • Use external systems, applications, search engines, and databases to conduct research and verify eligibility.
  • Compute award amounts and perform related calculations.
  • Prepare and maintain documents related to eligibility determinations.
  • Refer applicants or recipients who need social services to appropriate staff after completing referral forms.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Eligibility Technician I
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience:

    Minimum of two years general or specialized clerical experience OR two years responsible experience involving public contact, interviewing, math computations, or complex forms.
  • Knowledge:
    Interviewing and record‑keeping techniques; standard office procedures.
  • Abilities:
    Interview effectively, gather and evaluate data, interpret rules, speak & write effectively, maintain systematic records, establish priorities, meet deadlines.
  • Preferred:
    Bilingual English‑Spanish and experience with CalSAWs.
Eligibility Technician II
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience:

    Twelve months performing duties comparable to Eligibility Technician I.
  • Knowledge:
    Public social service agency goals; laws, rules, and regulations governing eligibility; interviewing and record‑keeping techniques; computer skills.
  • Abilities:
    Interview effectively, gather and evaluate data, interpret rules, communicate with diverse populations, navigate software, maintain records, manage high volume of work.
  • Preferred:
    Working knowledge of CalSAWs.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
  • Valid California driver’s license may be required.
  • All candidates must take an online test. Bilingual Spanish candidates must pass an un‑proctored Spanish assessment.
  • Identity verification and retesting may be required.
