The LASD Reserve Deputy Sheriffs are volunteers who support department operations and undergo the same hiring standards as full‑time Deputies. They may work in patrol, custody, court services, investigations, and other assignments, and must meet the same hiring, background, medical, and psychological standards. After completing the Sheriff’s Training Academy, a Level 1 reserve deputy can work patrol alone or with a partner and has peace officer status.

- Search for and handle evidence/contraband
- Use a firearm
- Drive a County vehicle
- Take appropriate action in response to public offenses as allowed by law and policy
- Perform law enforcement administrative and operational duties (e.g., writing reports, maintaining logs)
- Maintain knowledge of policies and procedures
- Maintain equipment and attend required training
- Respond to emergent situations to protect lives and property
- Appear in court to testify
- Perform collateral duties and engage in community policing
- Correctional or court facility assignments: inmate supervision, rule enforcement, searches, transport, security, and related duties
- Patrol station / specialized unit / non-custodial assignments
- Specialized and highly specialized duties, including investigations and advanced training roles
- AGE: Must be at least 19 1/2 years old at time of application
- EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
- EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent
- LICENSE: Valid California Class C driver license or higher; out-of-state applicants must obtain a CA license by appointment
- PHYSICAL CLASS: 4 – Arduous
- VISION: 20/70 in each eye, corrected to 20/30; color perception normals
- HEARING: Specified hearing criteria for better/worse ear
- Supplemental questionnaire is part of the process and may affect eligibility
- Background investigation includes Live Scan, polygraph, and checks; disqualification may affect reapplication
- Physical fitness tests (VPAT) and a structured interview are required components
- Medical and psychological evaluations are required; failure may affect reapplication
LASD operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Appointees must be willing to work with diverse populations and under demanding conditions, including potential exposure to dangerous situations.
Examination content and preparation- Examination consists of computer-based multiple-choice tests assessing writing, reading, reasoning, and data interpretation
- A passing score is required for eligibility; retesting policies apply
- Test preparation resources are available from LASD and POST websites
