This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. If you are interested in giving back to the community, the Corona Police Department has an exciting opportunity to join the team as a Police Officer Trainee. The department is comprised of 250 employees across the Division of Field Services, Investigative Services, and Support Services. Our mission is to ensure the safety and security of the community while maintaining trust through transparency.

The Police Officer Trainee is an entry–level, non‑sworn training classification.

Information Meetings

There will be two informational meetings on Wednesday, February 18 at 5 pm and 7 pm. Attendance is optional but will provide a clearer understanding of the process and expectations for a Police Officer Trainee.

Benefits

Upon successful completion of the POS T approved academy, a Police Officer Trainee may be appointed to the Police Officer classification. Below is an overview of the benefits for a trainee and the changes upon promotion.

  • Salary: $72,552 annualized; $96,312 annualized upon promotion.
  • Bargaining Group:
    Not represented by the Corona Police Employees Association.
  • CalPERS PEPRA Member: 2 % @ 62.
  • Classic Member: 2.7 % @ 55 (PEPRA Member) and 3 % @ 50.
  • Annual leave: 168 hours per year for 1‑5 years of service; 210 hours per year thereafter; additional 130 hours for holidays worked.
  • Medical Allowance: $978/month (single), $1,646/month (2‑party), $2,173/month (family).
  • Medical Opt‑Out: $200/month (single), $400/month (2‑party), $600/month (family).
  • Life Insurance: 5 ½ times employee's basic earnings, up to $750,000.
  • Holidays: 13.
  • Retirement Health Savings: $50 quarterly (single), $1,250 quarterly (family).
  • Bi‑Lingual Pay: 4 % of base pay.
  • Post Incentive Pay:
    Intermediate 3 % of base pay;
    Advanced 8 % of base pay.
  • Longevity Pay: $2,320 annually, $89.23 per pay period.
  • Marksmanship Incentive: $16.15 per pay period.
  • Uniform Allowance: $132.31 per pay period.
  • Safety Vest Reimbursement: $1,150 every 5 years.

Disclaimer:
City‑paid benefits are governed by the latest Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City of Corona and the Corona Police Employees Association. In case of conflict, the MOU shall control.

Knowledge & Education
  • Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of English, including spelling, composition, and grammar.
  • Familiarity with modern office equipment, including computers and relevant software.
Skills & Abilities
  • Learn basic functions, principles, and practices of law enforcement agencies.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Learn and understand the organization and operation of the City and related agencies.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within policy and legal guidelines.
Experience
  • Must successfully complete a Basic Police Academy approved by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
  • Must possess a current and valid California Class C driver’s license at appointment, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Applicants must be 20.5 years of age at time of application.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.

This position is FLSA non‑exempt and eligible for overtime compensation.

Testing Process

New testing process:
Candidates meeting the minimum qualification will receive an email invitation to complete an online written exam (108 questions in Reading, Math, Reasoning & Analysis, Writing, and Human Relations). The exam lasts 3 hours and must be completed prior to the due date. A score of 70 % or higher is required to advance.
