Under the supervision of the Fire Marshal, the employee is responsible for performing plan review, inspections, and other duties as required. The position will also be involved to varying degrees with public education, public relations, exterior hazard abatement, engine company pre‑fire planning, record keeping, and report writing.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The employee receives supervision from the Fire Marshal. • Review plans to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local fire safety laws, ordinances, and codes, including planning applications, subdivision applications, site plans, building and tenant improvement plans, and fire protection systems.
• Attend meetings with planning and building departments, architects, contractors, developers, and the public.
• Utilize the District’s citation process when appropriate and conduct in‑house training for field inspection staff.
• Formulate standardized field inspection guidelines and record‑keeping systems.
• Support emergency operations as requested.

• Principles, practices, and techniques of fire prevention.
• Fire laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Building materials, construction, and combustion principles.
• Fire protection and alarm systems, explosives, and flammables handling.
• Business English, report writing standards, and basic arithmetic.

• Read and interpret building plans and specifications.
• Conduct code research, analyze findings, and prepare reports and recommendations.
• Deal tactfully with the public and make oral presentations.
• Maintain detailed records and use computer systems and software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, InDesign, Bluebeam, AutoCAD).

At least three years’ experience in an organized fire prevention/fire and life safety bureau, including fire inspection, plan review, and public education/relations.

• Associate of Arts/Science Degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
• Completion of California State Fire Training:
  Fire Inspector 1A‑1D, Fire Inspector 2A‑2D, Plans Examiner 1A‑1C, and CA statutes and regulations.

• Certification as an International Code Council Fire Plans Examiner within one year of employment.
• California State Fire Marshal certification for Plans Examiner within three years of employment.

Valid California driver’s license required.
