Under the direction of the Area Construction Senior Transportation Engineer and/or the Resident Engineer, the incumbent performs various transportation construction and engineering work in the office and field settings. As the incumbent progresses in experience, the assignment will increase from average to high difficulty. Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. For Pattern II candidates who must pass the TE Civil written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle.
Failing to do so may negatively impact hiring eligibility.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible. Special Requirements- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
- Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) from the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required and must be submitted with your state application. The SOQ must not exceed two (2) pages in length and be written in no less than 12‑point font. Each evaluation criterion must be addressed separately and in order. Resumes, letters, and other materials will not be considered as your response to the SOQ.
