JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Thermal Operating Technician.

Under the direction of the Chief Operating Engineer and supervision of the Thermal Operating Supervisor/Shift Engineer, the Thermal Operating Technician is responsible for carrying out all operating, monitoring, and reporting activities, common and auxiliary equipment and systems associated with large high-pressure boilers and turbo-alternator units to meet station procedural and regulatory compliance. This role will be primarily on a rotating shift basis.

KEY

ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Carry out operating and monitoring activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of all assigned units, equipment, and systems, including process systems, feed water, fuel, chemical, water treatment, emission control, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Recognize abnormalities, inefficiencies, and hazards, and take corrective action through analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Perform all work protection code (WPC) activities as trained and, when required, act as the controlling/issuing authority for assigned equipment.
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team, wearing a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus when necessary, and receive training in firefighting, confined space rescue, chemical spill response, and First Aid/CPR.
  • Carry out various measurements, including equipment, system, and process testing, to recognize standards and procedures.
  • Plan, control, and execute all phases of unit start-ups, including pre-start checks of equipment and systems.
  • Ensure appropriate actions during unit or bulk electricity system emergencies and proper integration during unit start-ups.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned emergency equipment, prepare reports, retain documentation for audits, and use light hand tools for minor maintenance.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus a 3rd class Operating Engineer (OE) Certificate valid in the province of Ontario as a minimum requirement. *
  • Proficient in the use of standard office computer software (Excel, Word, and Outlook)
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills and able to work in a team environment with other trades and operators
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization
  • Must be able to work shifts or days as needed

* Candidates pursuing or that hold a 2nd or 1st Class OE Certificate are highly desirable
