PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $5,787.00 per month to $7,195.00 per month (Step 1 - Step 12).

Under the supervision of the Director of Planning, Design, and Construction (PDC), the Design and Document Specialist position is responsible for preparing design and construction drawings for capital improvement, infrastructure, deferred maintenance, and special event projects. The position performs a wide range of complex drafting assignments from minor design work to modification of construction documents. The position must have enough experience to understand and analyze architectural and construction documents and understand how buildings are generally designed and constructed.
The position also manages the campus inventory of plans, specifications, and project archives in both hard copies and electronically based on the campus standard filing system.
ResponsibilitiesPrepare Drafting Work for Projects and Special Events
- Create drawings and specifications for minor capital and campus user-requested projects.
- Field measure existing site and building conditions.
- Prepare drawings, renderings, and other presentation materials using AutoCAD, BIM modeling, and PowerPoint.
- Create drawings for special campus events by working closely with the project manager and special events coordinator.
- Assist in coordinating plan approvals with the Office of State Fire Marshal and appropriate permitting agencies.
Coordinate and Prepare Project Documents and Archives
- Ensure project documents are filed both hard copies and electronically and in accordance with the campus standard filing system.
- Serve as the go-to person for hard copies and electronically archived files needed by project managers, facilities personnel, consultants, contractors, and related agencies.
- Assist in developing and updating campus standards.
- Review plans, specifications, and submittals for consistency.
Coordinate Minor Projects and Campus Signage
- Coordinate minor projects with campus users, consultants, contractors, and facilities personnel.
- Perform an annual review and tracking of campus signage inventory and update as needed.
- Coordinate signage design, procurement, and installation.
Coordinate and Update Campus Floor Plans
- Review completed projects by external contractors and in-house staff and update campus floor plans annually or as needed.
- Field measure, verify, and document existing site, building, and space conditions.
- Update and maintain campus floor plans, site plans, and other plans such as infrastructure, fire truck routing, ADA routes, and evacuation plans.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the drafting methods, materials, techniques, instruments and symbols used in architectural, mechanical, civil and electrical drawings.
- General knowledge of engineering mathematics.
- Thorough knowledge of the calculation of difficult dimensioning, and the methods used in quantity estimating.
- Working knowledge of the various materials used in building construction.
- Working knowledge of the laws, ordinances and other regulations applicable to building construction, maintenance and repair.
