To operate, repair and maintain the Agency’s water treatment plants and related facilities; to perform quality control tests; and to record, report and log plant operations test results and maintenance work.

Examples of Duties
  • Control and operate treatment plant equipment, including pumps and valves by using SCADA computer equipment to control, monitor and regulate the flow of water treatment and processing of chemicals through the plant.
  • Observe variations in operating conditions and interprets computer and gauge readings and charts and conduct visual inspections.
  • Coordinate the rate with demand.
  • Record, report and log plant operation, test results, maintenance work performed and unusual operating conditions.
  • Verify readings and trends.
  • Coordinate operation and maintenance of treatment plant with other departments.
  • Ensure proper operation of treatment plant, equipment and related facilities.
  • Verify and calibrate process instrumentation as required.
  • Backwash filter beds.
  • Collect, test, analyze and record water samples, adjust chemical feeders and other plant equipment and evaluate historical data to determine the best method to treat water.
  • Maintain, inspect and clean plants, operating equipment and facilities.
  • Receive supplies delivered and ensure that they are properly stored.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and other work related equipment.
  • Clean and maintain plant equipment when necessary under the direction of a supervisor or maintenance personnel.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other Agency employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications - Knowledge
  • Principles and practices associated with operating a water treatment plant and associated facilities.
  • Emergency response procedures.
  • Methods for troubleshooting equipment associated with the operation of a water treatment plant.
  • SCADA systems and operations.
  • Water quality troubleshooting practices.
  • Mechanical knowledge of pumps, electrical motors, piping and control systems.
  • Tools and equipment needed to make minor repairs and adjustments to water treatment plants.
  • Applicable federal, state, local and Agency drinking water standards and regulations.
  • Proper handling and storage of hazardous materials.
  • Water quality testing procedures.
  • Mechanical, electrical and hydraulic principles.
  • Advanced arithmetic.
  • Modern office equipment including use of word processing, database and spreadsheets applications.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of work.
Required Qualifications - Ability
  • Independently perform water treatment plant operations and activities as permitted with a Water Treatment Operators Grade 3 certificate.
  • Independently troubleshoot and resolve operational water quality issues.
  • Demonstrate initiative and independent thinking.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve maintenance issues associated with water treatment.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Understand and apply local, State and Federal regulations related to the operation of a drinking water treatment plant.
  • Use a variety of software related to the operation of the plant and distribution system.
  • Keep and maintain written records and reports.
  • Follow safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform standardized water tests.
  • Recognize unusual, inefficient, or dangerous operating conditions.
  • Interpret plant and piping diagrams.
