Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Supervising Transportation Engineer, the Senior Transportation Engineer provides expertise in highway engineering and traffic operations as a member of the California Highway Patrol's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). The role involves investigating severe traffic collisions and/or incidents where involved parties may have suffered fatal or serious injuries. The incumbent must be available 24/7.

  • Collaborate with the CHP team on investigations.
  • Prepare and present investigative reports.
  • Coordinate with attorneys and participate in depositions.
  • Provide court testimony as required.
  • Operate a motor vehicle independently.

Working Conditions

Position located at 100 S. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

The incumbent will be assigned a state vehicle equipped with GPS, used for official state business only. Work will take place at the CHP MAIT team's location and crash sites; travel within or outside district boundaries may be required, including overnight travel.

Field work conditions may involve extreme temperatures (up to 125°F heat, down to 10°F cold), strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow.

Appropriate field clothing:

  • Closed‑toe shoes/work boots.
  • Long or short‑sleeve shirt as required.
  • Long pants (no shorts or cutoffs).
  • Safety gear (hard hat, vest/jacket, glasses, etc.) when required by department and CHP.

The position may be eligible for telework; the amount is at the Department's discretion.

Key requirements:

  • SENIOR TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER, CALTRANS classification.
  • Valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Completion of California Highway Patrol Traffic Crash Reconstruction Certification Program and any other necessary programs.

The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit a SOQ will disqualify candidates. The SOQ must be typed, single‑spaced, 12‑point Arial, 1 page and answer the following:

  • Describe your work experience, training, assignments, and projects related to Caltrans manuals (Highway Design Manual, MUTCD, Traffic Safety Systems Guidance, etc.).
  • Describe knowledge or skills around crash reconstruction or investigations gained through training or experience.
  • Demonstrate communication skills, both oral and written, including technical reports, memoranda, and meetings with stakeholders.
  • Explain why you are the best candidate for this job.
