About the RoleUnder general direction of the Construction Office Chief, the incumbent will serve as a Construction Engineer or Resident Engineer on complex projects requiring a large staff to monitor contractor operations, direct payment and change order processing, manage construction contract claims, and handle administrative tasks for the District Construction Field Office.
Responsibilities- Direct processing of payments to contractors and change orders.
- Plan, organize, and direct engineering and administrative tasks of the District Construction Field Office.
- Oversee processing of Construction Contract Claims.
- Monitor contractor operations on large‑staff projects.
- Maintain compliance with California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers regulations.
- Communicate effectively with management, local agencies, and the public.
- Track and monitor cost, scope, and schedule of projects; resolve issues and prepare contingencies.
- Lead project teams and develop partnerships through collaboration.
- Adhere to safety requirements, including wearing hard hats, safety vests, and eye protection on site.
- Valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
- Valid driver’s license (required for operating state‑owned or leased vehicles).
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) – typed, no more than two pages, 12‑point Arial font.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including presentations.
- Experience with project delivery, highway construction and design, and managing complex projects.
- Experience in leading teams and anticipating implications of decisions.
- Knowledge of tracking and monitoring cost, scope, schedule, and operating budgets.
- Ability to develop, maintain, and strengthen partnerships through communication and collaboration.
- Exam eligibility: must be on the Senior Transportation Engineer Caltrans exam list (or meet other state civil service eligibility rules).
