ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the Chief, Office of Encroachment Permits (a Senior Transportation Engineer), the employee reviews permit applications, coordinates reviews with other internal and external stakeholders, and completes all necessary work associated with the execution and issuance of encroachment permits. The employee inspects permit work to ensure compliance with traffic control requirements and all applicable regulations, statutes, and standards throughout District 3.
The employee also attends and represents Caltrans at meetings on permit policies, procedures, and requirements. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state‑owned vehicle.
Position located at 3165 Gold Valley Drive, Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County. Work involves field work, earthwork, paving operations, lab work, and exposure to fog, weather conditions, night work, chemicals, equipment, machinery, heat, cold, dust, fumes, and outdoor conditions. Hard hat, safety vest or approved safety shirt, and eye protection must always be worn in the field. In the office, employees normally work in a climate‑controlled environment under artificial light.
Work may require night work, flexible hours, frequent shifts changes, geographic transfer, travel, and overtime. The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation :(Mandatory) program may require assignments in various functional units and can be located throughout the state. Loan assignments to other project delivery functions may also occur when needed.
- Eligibility determined by score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. Candidates without current eligibility must be on the state examination list.
- For candidates who do not have current eligibility and require the TE Civil in‑person written hurdle exam, DO NOT take the TE Civil online exam before passing the written hurdle.
- Participation in the Department of Justice background check and annual CHP Form 101A signature.
- Supplementary documentation (unofficial or official transcripts, foreign equivalency reports) required for education‑based eligibility.
- For Range D appointment a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required. For other ranges a PE license is not required.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
- Create a completed application package, including STD 678 or the electronic State Employment Application.
- Submit electronically through your Cal Career Account (recommended) or as a hard‑copy via mail or drop‑off addresses listed below.
- All required documents must be received or postmarked by the Final Filing Date. Mobile bar codes and QR codes are not considered postmark dates.
- State Examination/Employment Application (STD 678) or electronic State Employment Application.
- Evidence of experience and education relating to the Minimum Qualifications (transcripts, license, certificate).
