Under the general direction of a Principal Transportation Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for the development of stormwater and other water quality best management practices, procedures and methodologies related to Caltrans project delivery and maintenance and operations. This position coordinates activities which include the development of new technologies and the innovative use of other existing products, practice and procedures pertinent to stormwater and other water quality management.
The incumbent oversees the Department’s statewide water quality monitoring program as required by the statewide National Pollution Discharge Elimination Permit (NPDES), state and federal regulations and is responsible for research/applied studies being undertaken by the Department to meet water quality standards.

Special Requirements- 549.90 – this position will be filled via the California Department of Transportation Managerial Selection Program (MSP) process.
- Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
- Either I
- One year of transportation engineering experience as a senior level engineer in the California state service.
- Or II
- One year of supervisory or managerial experience equivalent in level to a Senior Transportation Planner in the California state service.
- Two years of civil engineering work at the Associate Engineer level or higher in the California state service.
- Or III
- Broad and extensive (more than five years) transportation engineering experience, two years of which are equivalent in responsibility to the senior level engineer in the California state service.
This examination will utilize an evaluation of each candidate’s experience and education (E&E) compared to a standard developed from the Class Specification. Candidates are required to submit a complete State application (STD 678) and include all experience relevant to the Minimum Qualifications.
