Department: Caltrans, Division of Engineering Services (DES), Structures and Engineering Services (SES), Office of Design and Technical Services (ODTS), Structure Hydraulics and Hydrology Branch
Under the direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor), the Transportation Engineer (Civil) will:
- Conduct hydraulic studies and prepare written reports, models, maps, charts, and graphs for rivers, canals, and floodways where Caltrans or local agency infrastructure encroaches into waterways.
- Perform more advanced work as experience progresses, including leading activities of various engineering and technical personnel.
- Travel and/or temporarily relocate as needed.
Candidates must meet the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. Additional requirements include:
- Score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam for eligibility.
- For applicants needing to take the TE Civil in‑person written hurdle exam, do not take the online exam before passing the written hurdle.
- For new hires, a state examination list is required.
- For Appointment to Range D, a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers is required. For lower ranges, a PE license is not required.
SOQ is required. It should be no more than two single‑spaced pages (12‑point font) and must cover the following:
- List courses, job experience, and training related to Hydrology and Hydraulics.
- Describe ability to work effectively in a team environment and any leadership roles.
- Describe written and oral communication skills, organization, and meeting deadlines.
- List computer skills applicable to the role (e.g., MS Office, HEC‑RAS, SRH‑2D).
- Explain why you would be a good fit for Structure Hydraulics & Hydrology.
