NV5 is looking for an Engineer to manage construction materials testing and special inspections personnel and geotechnical projects in our Nevada City, California operations. The position includes management and oversight of projects in the greater Sacramento area, Truckee/Tahoe, and the northern Sacramento Valley. The person must possess skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and must be steadfast in the execution of assigned duties.

The successful candidate should be a registered Civil Engineer in the State of California, or capable of obtaining their CA PE. The person needs to be an effective leader and collaborator with an ability to manage a fleet of soil/concrete technicians, ICC Inspectors and coordinate with multiple NV5 laboratories.

What We’re Looking For

Licensed Civil Engineer in California (or ability to obtain within 12 months). Experience with CA Division of State Architect (DSA) HCAI, and/or Caltrans Projects – preferred. Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership skills. Ability to balance technical excellence with business success.

Responsibilities
  • Engineering Manager on Public/Private/DSA/HCAI projects.
  • Direct, review and monitor work performed by the materials testing and inspection personnel.
  • Review field and laboratory reports.
  • Review plans and specifications.
  • Prepare and/or review materials testing proposals.
  • Project Management:
    Manage projects from inception through completion and have primary responsibility for managing client expectations and ensuring that delivery meets expectations. Manage projects to meet client expectations for technical excellence, budget and schedule.
  • Participate in training and mentoring of staff.
  • Conduct annual and interim performance reviews. Monitor and assess progress toward performance goals.
  • Certifications:

    Ensure that all accreditations and certifications of the laboratory and staff are maintained and up to date.
  • Maintaining client relationships and creating new project opportunities.
  • Position may require travel to work with other NV5 office locations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil with emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with construction materials testing.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-discipline team, think creatively and problem solve.
  • Demonstrated experience with reviewing technical specifications and field/laboratory reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of building codes and construction industry standards. DSA, OSHPD experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Caltrans, AASHTO, and ASTM test methods pertaining to construction materials including HMA, aggregate, soils, steel, masonry and concrete.
  • Experience reviewing concrete/asphalt mix designs.
  • Experience overseeing materials testing and inspections.
  • Thorough understanding of accreditation policies for all relevant agencies including Caltrans, DSA, AMRL, CCRL, HCAI, etc.
