Junior Industrial Hygienist

Under the close supervision of the Senior Industrial Hygienist with the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Enforcement Branch, the Junior Industrial Hygienist is a trainee level position. The Junior Industrial Hygienist performs less complex industrial hygiene work related to occupational health hazards in workplaces across the State. This includes conducting less complex health inspections, performing industrial hygiene monitoring of chemical, biological, and physical agents, and assisting Associate and Senior Industrial Hygienists in conducting complex surveys, sampling, and inspections of occupational environments and potential health hazards in specific substances, industries, or processes.

All work is performed in accordance with DIR-DOSH policies, the DOSH Compliance Policy and Procedure Manual, Directives, and Memorandums.

• Perform less complex industrial hygiene work and health inspections.
• Monitor chemical, biological, and physical agents in occupational settings.
• Assist higher-level Industrial Hygienists in conducting complex surveys, sampling, and inspections.
• Work in accordance with DIR-DOSH policies, procedures, directives, and memorandums.
• Support enforcement activities to help ensure compliance with regulations.

This job is located at the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, Enforcement Branch – Redding District Office, 381 Hemsted Drive, Redding, CA 96002. The work environment includes both office settings and field work with potential exposure to safety hazards and hazardous substances. Typical conditions include:

• Outdoor work 8+ hours daily in various weather conditions (rain, wind, heat, cold).
• Sitting at a desk and using a computer or laptop.
• Using a multi-line telephone or mobile device.
• Travel via private/state vehicle or public transportation, including possible overnight travel within California.

There may be involvement in emergency operations as part of area teams, field inspections, coordination, and assisting agencies such as CalOES and FEMA in disaster work. The position may support incident command activities to assist the Department in emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation functions as defined in the California State Emergency Plan and the Department’s Administrative Orders.
