The Faculty of Science is opening a prestigious Mac Gillavry Fellowship position in the broad theme of Computational Science & Sustainability. Computational Science & Sustainability

The Informatics Institute at the University of Amsterdam is seeking to hire a highly motivated Assistant Professor in the broad area of Computational Science and Sustainability to join our team. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Computational Science Lab at the Institute. The Computational Science Lab develops computational models of real world phenomena and uses simulation to advance understanding of the complex adaptive systems that shape our society and environment.

We seek a Computational Scientist whose research tackles challenges related to sustainability in any of its many dimensions.

The potential scope of the tenure‑track position is broad, but the candidate should preferably align with ongoing research at the Computational Science Lab, focusing on Modelling and Simulation, Complexity Science and connect to the theme of sustainability. The candidate is expected to contribute to education at the institute and play an important role in the Master Complex Systems and Policy, the Master of Computational Science a joint degree programme of the UvA and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

The tenure tracker is expected to acquire his/her own independent funding from sources such as the Dutch Science Foundation, the European Commission and Industrial Partners.

This is what you will do

You will:

  • contribute to the development of the institute’s research profile by carrying out cutting‑edge research in Computational Science & Sustainability;
  • publish research results in international, peer‑reviewed publications;
  • acquire external funds for research projects from sources such as the Dutch national funding agency NWO, EU funding via Horizon Europe, via public‑private partnerships, and other relevant organizations;
  • supervise student research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • teach courses within the bachelor and master’s programs in computational science (teaching is approximately 30% of the position’s total time);
  • engage in outreach activities.
What we ask of you

You should have:

  • a PhD in a relevant discipline;
  • a strong publication record as evidenced by international peer‑reviewed publications and proven ability to obtain research funding;
  • excellent teaching skills as well as the ability to supervise students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • excellent command of written and spoken English;
  • the Dutch University Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO) or willingness to acquire this within the first two years and the willingness to learn Dutch.
This is what we offer you

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week with a tenure‑track agreement for the duration of 5 years (which is part of a 5‑year temporary contract). The arrangement is such that after a maximum of three years and positive assessment and evaluation you will be offered a permanent position while the track continues towards the level of associate professor.

The preferred starting date is as soon as possible. You will be offered a permanent position after positive assessment and evaluation.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between €4,728 to €6,433 (scale 11). This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year‑end allowance. The UFO profile UD 2 is applicable. A favourable tax…
