UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is the lifelong learning arm of the university. The division maintains the most diverse portfolio on the campus, with programs spanning pre-college, professional continuing education, workforce development, international academic and cultural exchange, and training services for corporate and agency partners. As a global leader in continuing education, CPE serves learners regionally, nationally and globally, and posts more than 55K enrollments annually making it the third largest UC Extension by enrollment.
Beyond its community-facing role, CPE serves as the internal hub for online education in support of other academic units on the campus.
The GIS Instructor Partner will collaborate with UC Davis support team members to deliver and continuously improve courses within the GIS Professional Certificate. Through a combination of online and recorded lectures, the instructor will ensure that students obtain the required skills in the domain area by the end of the course. The primary responsibility of the GIS Instructor Partner is to support learners in developing practical, job-relevant skills in ArcGIS Pro, GIS data management, and database design concepts that apply across industries (e.g., planning, utilities, transportation, public sector, health, business, environmental, and more).
Under the general supervision of Instructional Services, the Instructor Partner will serve as the subject matter expert to teach an intensive learning experience delivered as part of the UC Davis GIS Analyst Program. The role is a “work for hire” focused on ensuring student academic progress and outcomes.
The Instructor Partner will collaborate closely with CPE Instructional Designers and other GIS instructors to create a high-impact learning experience. The primary responsibility of this role is to teach and support learners using advanced ArcGIS Pro workflows, with an emphasis on data organization, integrity, and scalable practices. This role will also contribute to the continuous refresh and modernization of the curriculum.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Geography/GIS, Engineering, Agriculture, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional experience using ArcGIS Pro with geodatabases, data organization, and database design concepts.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate to a diverse student population.
- Two or more years’ experience in teaching or training professionals.
- Ability to collaborate on curriculum updates and effectively teach a broad, multi-industry audience.
- Advanced degree related to GIS, geospatial science, or data management.
- Advanced proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, including geodatabases, data modeling, and data QA.
- Active membership in GIS professional associations.
- Experience teaching online.
- Two or more years’ experience in curriculum development.
- Experience supporting applied learning opportunities, such as internships or industry projects.
The CPE Instructor position is an exempt by-agreement appointment. The incumbent will be hired into the UC Davis payroll title of Teacher-University Extension Contract YR and will be subject to Federal and State Income Tax With holdings.
CompensationCompensation will be a set amount assigned based on the nature of the work, such as course development, instructional services, or coaching sessions.
Position is not eligible for UC health & welfare benefits. As a by-agreement instructor, the employment is considered “part-time” and will participate in the Defined Contribution Plan (the “DC Plan”) as a Safe Harbor† participant. By-Agreement instructors are automatically enrolled in the DC Plan per their eligible appointment. Safe Harbor participants contribute 7.5% of their wages, on a pretax basis, in lieu of contributing to Social Security.
