Middle School Teacher - Social Studies & Religion

Job Summary

The Middle School Social Studies & Religion Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-based instruction in social studies and faith-based instruction rooted in the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. This position supports students’ academic, spiritual, moral, and personal development by integrating Catholic values across both content areas. The teacher serves as an academic instructor, faith leader, and positive role model, fostering critical thinking, historical understanding, and faith formation within a respectful and supportive classroom environment.

Job Responsibilities

Instructional Duties

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality instruction in social studies disciplines (such as history, geography, civics, and related fields) and religion in alignment with school and diocesan curriculum standards.
  • Design lessons that promote inquiry, critical thinking, and active learning through discussion, projects, primary sources, Scripture, Church teachings.
  • Integrate Catholic values, perspectives, and social teaching across both social studies and religion curricula.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, developmental, and spiritual needs of students.
  • Assess student learning using a variety of formative and summative methods and use data to inform instruction.
  • Maintain accurate records of lesson plans, grades, and student progress, and provide timely feedback.

Faith Formation & Integration

  • Foster a classroom environment that reflects Catholic identity, respect for human dignity, and Gospel values.
  • Lead students in prayer and encourage participation in liturgies, retreats, service projects, and other faith-based activities.
  • Model Christian living and support students in their spiritual growth and moral decision‑making.
  • Ensure all religious instruction and classroom discussions are consistent with the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church.
  • Collaborate with clergy, campus ministry, and faculty to support the spiritual life of the school.

Classroom Management & Student Support

  • Create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment conducive to academic success and faith development.
  • Establish clear behavioral expectations and consistently enforce school policies with fairness and compassion.
  • Promote responsibility, self‑discipline, and respect as part of students’ academic and moral formation.
  • Supervise students during assigned duties, including transitions, lunch, recess, and school activities.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with colleagues and administration on curriculum planning, interdisciplinary projects, and student support.
  • Communicate professionally and regularly with parents/guardians, colleagues, and administrators.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school‑wide events, and liturgical celebrations.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Theology, Religious Studies, Social Studies, History, or a related field required;
Master’s degree preferred.

Valid state teaching certification or eligibility/willingness to obtain certification.

Strong knowledge of Catholic doctrine, Scripture, and moral theology, as well as social studies content.

Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church, committed to modeling faith in action.

Experience teaching middle school students or working with adolescents preferred.
