Job Summary

This position will be assigned to the Maintenance & Operations department under the Business Services division. Under general supervision, to perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance and repair of assigned buildings and facilities; to perform a variety of semi-skilled work in several areas of the building trades including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, glazing, painting and HVAC. Exercise no oversight over County Office staff.

There may be a need to work nights and weekends. Travel across the county to different sites will be a requirement of this position.

Requirements / Qualifications
  • Education:

    Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to perform essential duties. Reading and writing at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Experience:

    Three years of experience in maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities with an emphasis on varied, semi-skilled trades work.
  • License or Certificate:
    Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license and appropriate vehicle operation insurance; maintain a good driving record.
  • Application Procedures:
    Applicants must submit a completed application and are encouraged to attach a résumé to the application material. Qualified applicants will be invited to a written examination (50%). Those passing the written examination will be invited to an oral examination covering the knowledge and skills required (50%). An eligibility list will be established and the top three ranks of candidates will be interviewed for final consideration and appointment.

    The eligibility list established will remain in effect for a period of six (6) months unless it no longer exists due to an insufficient number of available candidates.
  • Accommodations:
    If an applicant needs reasonable accommodation, we must be informed prior to the administration of the test.
  • Fingerprinting and TB clearance:
    If selected, fingerprinting is required. You will need to supply our office with a negative tuberculosis test clearance. The certificate is good for a four-year period. The TB test can be done through the Santa Cruz Health Department, Doctors on Duty Clinic or by a physician or clinic of your choice.

Benefits:
Employees assigned to this schedule are entitled to vision, dental and medical coverage for the employee and their dependents. There are multiple medical plan options, with possible employee premium contributions and a tax-sheltered Section 125 Plan. The COE contribution is prorated based on FTE. Retirement benefits are through CalPERS, with member contributions as applicable. The employee also receives long-term disability insurance and life insurance.

Stipends:
Associate Degree stipend of $375, Bachelor’s Degree stipend of $750, Master’s Degree stipend of $1,500, Doctorate Degree (no Master’s) stipend of $1,500 or Doctorate Degree (with Master’s) stipend of an additional $400 per year, prorated based on full-time equivalence.
